A flavorful and comforting dish combining tender sirloin steak with creamy queso cheese and seasoned long-grain white rice, enhanced by sautéed vegetables and aromatic spices. Perfect for a satisfying dinner that blends Tex-Mex inspiration with simple cooking techniques.

Ingredients

Scale

Steak and Seasoning

  • 1 lb sirloin steak
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Vegetables and Aromatics

  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 bell pepper, diced (any color)

Rice and Cheese

  • 1 cup long-grain white rice, cooked
  • 1 cup queso cheese (Monterey Jack or cheddar)

Other Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • Optional toppings: fresh cilantro, sour cream, avocado slices

Instructions

  1. Prepare Ingredients: Dice the onion and bell pepper, and mince the garlic cloves. Measure out spices and other ingredients to have everything ready.
  2. Cook the Steak: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Sear the sirloin steak for 4-5 minutes on each side until nicely browned and cooked to your preferred doneness. Remove from skillet and let the steak rest for a few minutes before slicing thinly against the grain.
  3. Sauté Vegetables: In the same skillet, add the diced onion and bell pepper. Cook over medium heat for 3-4 minutes until the vegetables are softened and fragrant. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute, stirring frequently to prevent burning.
  4. Add Spices and Rice: Stir in cooked long-grain white rice along with paprika, cumin, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Mix thoroughly to combine all flavors and heat through evenly.
  5. Melt the Cheese: Gradually add the queso cheese to the rice mixture while stirring continuously. Allow the cheese to melt completely, creating a creamy texture that coats the rice and vegetables.
  6. Combine and Serve: Fold the sliced steak into the cheesy rice mixture, ensuring everything is well combined and heated. Serve immediately topped with fresh cilantro, sour cream, and slices of avocado for added richness and freshness.

Notes

  • For best results, let the steak rest after cooking to keep it juicy.
  • You can substitute queso cheese with shredded Monterey Jack or cheddar if queso is unavailable.
  • Use cooked rice prepared a day ahead for better texture and easier mixing.
  • Adjust spices according to your heat preference, adding more chili powder or a dash of cayenne if desired.
  • This dish pairs well with a fresh green salad or steamed vegetables for a complete meal.
