Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients

  • 1 and 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 and 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 and 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water

Chocolate Frosting

  • 200 grams dark chocolate, chopped
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 and 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream or milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans, then lightly flour them to prevent sticking.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt to ensure an even mixture.
  3. Combine Wet Ingredients: In another bowl, whisk the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  4. Create Batter: Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing gently until combined. Slowly pour in the boiling water and stir until the batter is thin but well blended.
  5. Bake the Cake Layers: Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  6. Cool the Cakes: Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then turn them out onto wire racks to cool completely before frosting.
  7. Prepare the Chocolate Frosting: Melt the chopped dark chocolate over a double boiler or in short bursts in the microwave, stirring until smooth. In a bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy, gradually add powdered sugar, then mix in the melted chocolate, heavy cream, and vanilla extract until smooth and spreadable.
  8. Frost the Cake: Place one cake layer on a serving plate, spread a layer of frosting on top, then place the second cake layer over it. Frost the top and sides evenly with the remaining frosting.
  9. Serve: Slice the cake and serve at room temperature for the best flavor and texture.

Notes

  • Use high-quality cocoa powder and dark chocolate for a richer flavor.
  • Ensure the cake layers are completely cool before frosting to prevent melting.
  • You can add a pinch of espresso powder to the batter to enhance the chocolate flavor.
  • Store leftover cake in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or refrigerate up to 5 days.
  • Optionally, decorate with chocolate shavings or fresh berries for a festive look.
