This Amish Hamburger Steak Bake is a comforting, hearty casserole featuring juicy ground beef patties smothered in a rich, creamy onion gravy. Perfect for a family dinner, this classic recipe combines simple ingredients like ground beef, onions, and a luscious cream-based gravy baked to perfection in one skillet.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Patties

  • 2 lbs Ground beef (80/20 blend for best flavor)
  • 1/2 cup Breadcrumbs (Plain or seasoned)
  • 1 Egg (Beaten)
  • 1 Onion (Finely diced)
  • 2 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Black pepper

For the Gravy

  • 3 tbsp Butter (Salted or unsalted)
  • 3 tbsp All-purpose flour (For thickening gravy)
  • 2 cups Beef broth (Low sodium preferred)
  • 1 cup Heavy cream
  • 1 Onion (Sliced)
  • 1 tsp Garlic powder

Instructions

  1. Mix Patties: In a large bowl, gently combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, beaten egg, diced onion, salt, and black pepper until just combined, taking care not to overmix to keep the patties tender.
  2. Shape & Rest: Form the mixture into 6 to 8 oval-shaped patties. Set them aside to rest while you prepare the gravy base, which allows flavors to meld.
  3. Brown Patties: Heat an oven-safe skillet over medium heat. Brown the patties on each side for 3 to 4 minutes until they develop a nice golden crust. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
  4. Make Gravy: In the same skillet, add butter and sauté the sliced onions until soft and translucent. Stir in the flour and cook for about 2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste. Gradually whisk in the beef broth and heavy cream to create a smooth gravy. Add garlic powder, and bring the mixture to a simmer to thicken slightly.
  5. Bake Casserole: Nestle the browned patties back into the skillet with the gravy. Cover the dish tightly (with a lid or foil) and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 45 minutes. Remove the cover and bake for an additional 15 minutes to thicken the gravy and finish cooking.
  6. Rest & Serve: Remove the casserole from the oven and let it rest for 10 minutes before serving to allow the flavors to fully develop and the gravy to set slightly.

Notes

  • Using an 80/20 ground beef blend ensures juicy and flavorful patties.
  • Breadcrumbs help bind the patties without making them dense.
  • Resting the patties before cooking improves texture and flavor.
  • If you don’t have an oven-safe skillet, transfer the contents to a baking dish before baking.
  • For a thicker gravy, simmer it a bit longer before adding the patties back in.
  • Serve with mashed potatoes or buttered noodles for a complete meal.
