Amish Hamburger Steak Bake is a comforting, hearty casserole featuring seasoned ground beef patties smothered in a rich, creamy onion gravy. This classic dish blends simple pantry ingredients into a satisfying meal perfect for family dinners.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Patties

  • 2 lbs Ground beef (80/20 blend for best flavor)
  • 1/2 cup Breadcrumbs (Plain or seasoned)
  • 1 Egg (Beaten)
  • 1 Onion (Finely diced)
  • 2 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Black pepper

For the Gravy

  • 3 tbsp Butter (Salted or unsalted)
  • 3 tbsp All-purpose flour (For thickening gravy)
  • 2 cups Beef broth (Low sodium preferred)
  • 1 cup Heavy cream
  • 1 Onion (Sliced)
  • 1 tsp Garlic powder

Instructions

  1. Mix Patties: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, beaten egg, finely diced onion, salt, and black pepper, mixing gently to evenly distribute all ingredients without overworking the meat.
  2. Shape & Rest: Form the mixture into 6 to 8 oval-shaped patties. Set them aside to rest while you prepare the gravy, allowing the flavors to meld and patties to hold together better during cooking.
  3. Brown Patties: Heat an oven-safe skillet over medium heat and brown the patties for 3 to 4 minutes on each side until they develop a golden crust. Remove the browned patties and set aside temporarily.
  4. Make Gravy: In the same skillet, add butter and sauté the sliced onions until tender and translucent. Stir in the flour and cook for about 2 minutes to form a roux. Gradually whisk in beef broth and heavy cream, stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Add garlic powder and bring the gravy to a gentle simmer until it thickens.
  5. Bake Casserole: Nestle the browned patties back into the onion cream gravy in the skillet. Cover the skillet tightly, either with a lid or foil, and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 45 minutes. Then uncover and bake for an additional 15 minutes to thicken the gravy further and meld flavors.
  6. Rest & Serve: Remove the skillet from the oven and allow the casserole to rest for 10 minutes before serving. This resting time helps the gravy to set and patties to finish cooking evenly.

Notes

  • Using an 80/20 ground beef blend ensures the patties stay juicy and flavorful.
  • Season the breadcrumbs if plain ones are used to add extra flavor.
  • Make sure to use an oven-safe skillet for browning and baking to avoid transferring food to another dish.
  • Covering the casserole during baking helps retain moisture and cook patties evenly.
  • Resting the casserole after baking improves texture and enhances flavor melding.
